HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Welcome to the first and last newsletter! Yes, that's right, the first and last, but only for 2010. My intention was to put out newsletters on a quarterly basis, but often I am so busy working on the web site, traveling to and from events, ordering merchandise, and tackling never-ending paperwork that the | newsletter takes a back seat to other tasks. My goal for 2011 is to send one out each quarter.
2010 was a busy year. If I'm counting correctly I set up shop at 20 different events from Washington State to Southern California to Idaho. I put thousands of miles on my vehicle, met some really incredible people, and sold loads of tribal bling at festivals and on the web site. And, I loved every minute of it!
I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for your business and continued support during 2010. I am grateful for each and every one of you and hope our paths continue to cross during 2011.
May each of you enjoy a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year!
Sincerely,
Katherine

ADORNMENT IN INDIA
India has a long and rich history of personal adornment and the people of Rajasthan and Gujarat are no exception. Textiles and jewelry from these desert states are elaborate, colorful, and beautiful.
Textiles are loaded with shining shisha mirrors, fine hand embroidery, old coins, buttons, cowrie shells, and tassels. Even the animals are adorned. This camel, shown at right, was at the Desert Festival in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan and was wearing a heavy load of exquisite handmade textiles.
Jewelry is worn daily by village women and usually in great quantities. They go about their daily chores and even engage in hard labor while lavishly adorned in silver.
In many patriarchal societies, women usually have no rights to property. Jewelry is one asset that these women can possess and they wear it proudly. It is often an indicator of their caste, marital, or social status.

Silk Road Tribal sells many authentic pieces from India. They usually show signs of use and sometimes smell like campfire smoke. Imperfections not only add to the beauty and character of these pieces, but they might just give us a hint about their colorful journey. |

FEATURED ITEM
Mirrors, also known as shisha, are an important part of Indian textiles. They are used as a means to ward off the evil eye. They can be found on just about everything including furniture, clothing, tassels, wall hangings, and more. These mirrored textiles—salvaged from a traditional headcovering known as an odhni— have been turned into belt bases. They are used as part of tribal belly dance costuming. Silk Road Tribal carries a nice selection of these vintage pieces.
