Old aluminum klalakahl were worn on the ankles by Tuareg women. The engraved designs are protective symbols to ward off the evil eye. These anklets are also said to protect the feet from thorns and snakes. The Tuaregs are well known for the metalsmithing skills and geometric designs. These larger pieces could be worn as upper arm cuffs as popularized by tribal belly dancers. Aluminum. Tuareg. West Africa.
